Biographical Information:

John Dewey was born in Burlington, Vermont in 1859. He studied Philosophy and Psychology, and earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1884. Dewey spent most of his career teaching at the University level in Philosophy and Education. He taught at the University of Michigan from 1884 to 1888, then moved to the University of Minnesota from 1888 to 1889 before returning to the University of Michigan from 1889 until 1904. In 1904 he moved to Columbia University, where he taught until his retirement in 1930. Throughout his career Dewey developed and espoused his philosophy in his classes and in his many writings.
